One of the greatest thrills for every machinehead is the feeling the day you finally get that vintage model on the road, drive past any Mississauga Condos or Roncesvalles homes and watch heads turn in envy. Running a close second is the feeling you get when you repair your own vehicle rather than have somebody else do it. In both cases, you get to do something that you love (work with cars), save money, and see the end results of the project in action every day.
For all of those reasons, vehicle repair and restoration is one of the most popular activities among men today. It is also a surprisingly inexpensive hobby, surprising and inexpensive given the cost of a new vehicle that is. If you consider the cost of labour today however it makes sense to see that repairing or restoring yourself can sometimes run as little as one third of what it would take for someone else to do it. If you depend on a car, for say a work commute from Bowmanville real estate you know how much of a strain on your wallet car repairs can be if you can't do them yourself.
This section is all about restoring and repairing vintage and modern cars. In order to start restoring and repairing your own vehicles, it will be necessary to have a few basic plans in place. We are going to talk about those in the introduction, so that we can more specifically focus in the articles that will appear here.
Workspace
First, and most importantly, if you are going to repair and/or restore your own vehicles you will need a place to do it. Someone who rents a condo in downtown Toronto is often out of luck, as far as a personal vehicle workroom; doing work on your vehicles in the parking areas of these habitations is usually strictly prohibited. You can look for space to rent or use someone else's workspace, maybe you have a friend who doesn't use their garage in a Scarborough home.
Appropriate, of course, means big. Ideally, the area where you will be working on your vehicle will be covered, in order to protect the work you are doing, and yourself, from the weather. Not all of us can enjoy a shop or a covered cement pad in the backyard, so most of the time you will have to settle for the space available in your garage.
Tools
It almost goes without saying but we will anyway; there is no point in attempting a repair without the proper tools. Even given the costs of a car, the purchase of tools for repairing and restoration is likely to be the most expensive part of this task. There are hundreds of different tools, each with their own purpose. The amount you spend will be defined by just how much work you want to do yourself on your vehicle. There will be some tools that you can tranfer over from doing work around the house, like basement finishing but others are completely unique to car work.
Remember to include on your shopping list some common safety items. Most of the time working on a vehicle is just messy and not hazardous, but there are some parts where safety equipment is absolutely necessary. Batteries are easy to change but contain a lot of harmful ingredients; deal with them while wearing gloves and safety glasses. You might also want to think about ear plugs and coveralls, and of course the always handy creeper will take a lot of pain out of the equation.
Checklist filled out, it is time to get into some specifics when it comes to vehicle restoration and repairs!
